Your Baby Can Read Kit
have any mothers on here , used the “My Baby Can Read Kit” ?
Im just so curious about it, the commercial looks onvincing but im not sure if it really works.
Im sure that if it does work it’ll be hard work to teach your baby. Thanks in advance!
The “your Baby Can Read” DVD’s should actually be called “Your Baby Can Memorize the Words in our Movies”. An example of what the movie does is it will show a picture of a cat, then it will add the word CAT, then it will take the picture out leaving just the word CAT on the screen while saying the word CAT over and over through out the whole thing. So of course if your child watches this as often as they recommend (I believe they say at least twice a day) eventually they will memorize the word CAT and may recognize it when they see it elsewhere and appear to be “reading”, even though if they see a similar word that is not in the movie (such as “bat”) they will have no idea what it is. In my opinion its a waste of money. If you read your child the same book twice a day for months you’ll likely see the same results. Or for a lot less money you buy the baby einstein first words DVD’s which also display the words on the screen.
I personally think if you want to teach your child how to read phonics is a much better system then memorizing. Leap frog has some great toys that teach phonics (fridge phonics, word whammer, tag and tag junior) and they also have a couple of movies (letter factory and word factory) that teach phonics as well. My 3 year old enjoys the Leap Frog movies and has been learning to read from them. Right now it is still more from memory then actual reading but she is memorizing the sounds each letter makes and when she does “read” a word she knows from the movie, she sounds it out instead of just saying the word (instead of just saying “cat” she says “c-ah-t, cat” Best of all the leap frog movies are much cheaper then the “your baby can read” ones
