Your Baby Can Read System

Opinion of Your Baby Can Read?
Dr. Robert Titzers Early Learning Development System? Thinking of buying one. Thank you
I LOVED the Your Baby Can Read videos, and my daughter still asks for them. And, yes, she did learn to read using them.
She started watching them when she was 2 1/2, which was a couple months before she started talking (she was a late talker). Two months after she started talking, she started reading (four months into watching the videos). She had not yet finished the series–it took us six months to get through the series, since they are supposed to watch each 1/2 hour video every day till for about a month (sooner if they bore of it) and they should review here and there. My daughter loves these videos, but she also doesn’t watch TV, so that could affect the child’s interest in the series, which will affect how much they learn, of course.
Also, it teaches “sight” reading. The child memorizes the words. The advantage to this is that they can learn to read earlier than most children do. I don’t consider this a “getting ahead” as much as an extra year or more of having the pleasure of reading. It can be hard for a two or three year old to learn phonics, so this method works well for this age, though I’ve heard of people using flash cards with little ones to teach phonics. I didn’t think of this, so didn’t try it, and so I can’t comment on it. But, using the Titzer videos, the children will need to learn to sound out words later. There is time for that, if you don’t mind working with your children.
Apparently, if a child memorizes thousands of words, they figure out phonics just like they figure out grammar–by context and repetition, but it can take a lot of work to memorize that many words. For a child who is learning disabled, this is sometimes the only way they can learn to read, because phonics can just baffle them.
The other way to learn to sound out words is by phonics, of course, that teaches the child all the rules of how to sound out words.
Personally, we did the memorization with my two year old, and soon after she was three, she was reading on a first grade level.
But she ran into the problem of guessing words (i.e. reading “yes” as “eyes”), and I didn’t want the work of helping her memorize so many words, though she was very fast at it – doing three words a day. So, I opted to teach her phonics before bad habits (like guessing) were ingrained.
Teaching phonics to a three year old is not easy. We tried so many different programs, but now we’ve resorted to flash cards again, since she LOVES them. So, she sounds out what is on the flash cards and is learning phonics that way too.
So, the point I’m making is that people who advocate Phonics only will say not to use Titzer’s videos, because you will only have to teach them phonics later anyway and if they don’t learn to sound out words soon enough, they may start guessing and not learn to break that habit without a lot of work. But if you want to give them a head start reading and are willing to work with them to learn phonics afterwords, it can be great.
If I had to do it again, I would use Titzer’s videos. My daughter was so delighted learning to read, and she enjoyed the videos so much. I worked with her to learn many more words by sight (at least 700). I’m happy teaching her phonics too. (We use Phonics Pathways, and I make flash cards for us to play games with, instead of working out of the book, though we will review with the book for the eye training (reading across and down a page).
The one main advantage of using Titzer’s videos in my opinion is that my daughter is not intimidated by big words like “something” or “elephant” or even “gorilla”. Sure, she tries to take a short cut and guess here and there, but we are working on that. I just give her a gentle “sound it out” prompting and sometimes cover part of the word with my finger, and she self corrects. But big words are just not a challenge. She can sound out things like “sunflower”, and she won’t be four years old for three more months. If I had waited until she was four and could easily learn phonics with the materials out there (almost none are created for children under four), she would still be waiting to learn to read. We read a lot in our household and so making her wait could have been frustrating for her, as she is currently frustrated with not being able to write yet.
So, really it is your choice. I really, really liked these videos. I don’t feel that they waste too much time on pictures and videos–no more than is needed to keep the child’s interest. They are a good length and well done, in my opinion. There are also the “Love and Learning” videos that are much more expensive and waste much more time with video clips. I really didn’t like those. I was hoping it would help with more vocabulary and longer sentences, but it really wasn’t worth the cost to me, when I could just use flash cards and get the same result for cheaper (the book “How to Teach Your Baby to Read” by Doman explains this method).
